International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has recently published a new technical standard, which details the specs for a laptop charger is compatible with a wide range of laptops.
There is no legal compulsion for the use of this standard, but the announcement opens the road to the commercialization of universal laptop, which will lead to massive reduction of electronic waste.
Often, a computer charger will not be compatible with another laptop. The loss of a battery charger can lead to the abandonment of a perfectly functional computer. Electrotechnical Commission estimates that about 500,000 tons of electronic waste from Chargers.
The new specifications will make future front-end loaders to be resistant, environment-friendly and easy-to-use or replaced. The European Union has pressured the manufacturers, at the beginning of 2013, to introduce such a unique loader.
IEC admitted that it might take a while until these standards will be adopted in its entirety, but will use all means to make the new universal Chargers to become a reality.
