Game of Thrones Ep. 1 Iron from Ice review - One good start

In the past year, Telltale has announced work on 2-new franchises, Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones. After ‘Zer0 Sum’ (Borderlands’ first) came out last week, it was time for ‘Iron from Ice’, GoT’s first episode to shine.

After George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, got the HBO treatment and became one of the most popular TV shows to date, a number of games tried to capture the intrigue and brutality of Westeros (and Essos), and all of them failed in one way or another. With Telltale having The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us under its belt, both franchises addressing mature topics and creating difficult, nail-biting situations, it seemed Telltale and Game of Thrones were a match made in heaven. So, the announcement that the studio would be working on a GoT series, left many excited of the possibilities, and others worried that the studio is stretching too thin, and won’t be able to deliver.

For me, those fears have been allayed, now that both Tales from the Borderlands and Game of Thrones episodes have seen the light of day, and both delivered on what they promised. Still, while the first episodes were just released, I still fear the second ones might get what I call ‘The Wolf Among Us’ treatment.

Before we venture deep into Telltale’s first Game of Thrones episode, dubbed ‘Iron from Ice’, know that there are plenty of spoilers here, as the game takes place after the HBO show’s third season finale. If you don’t want any spoilers, turn back, go watch the show, or better yet, read the books.
