After Of Orcs and Men and Mars: War Logs, european developer Spiders is still struggling to deliver a decent RPG. Unfortunately, their latest take on the genre, the demon-possessed Bound by Flame isn’t one.
There aren't many competent and successful european RPGs these days. We've got your Witchers, Risens, and Gothics, but not much else, and the latter two are of debatable quality. Since Spiders is pretty good at twisting narratives (see Of Orcs and Men, where morally questionable green-beasts are pitted against amoral humans), I really wanted Bound by Flame, with its demonically posessed protagonist, to be a good game. After all, the premise alone could be going places, if competently executed.
Bound by Flame borrows a lot from its bretheren titles, from Dragon Age, to Dark Souls and the aforementioned Witcher, but it mixes everything in a mush that is not nearly as homogenous or polished as it portends to be.
