AMD Radeon Crimson 17.10.3 driver, optimized for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

  • Published in Drivers news

AMD launched a new driver, Crimson 17.10.3 which contains optimizations for the game Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

Wolfenstein II supports Vulkan for close-to-the-metal access to the GPU, and MachineGames deployed the Radeon GPU Profiler to enhance the game’s visual appeal, while optimizing overall performance. Vulkan support enhances the Wolfenstein II experience for Radeon fans on multiple fronts:

  • Asynchronous Shaders – The Asynchronous Compute Engines in AMD’s GCN and Polaris GPU architectures can submit commands without waiting for other tasks to complete
  • Rapid Packed Math – Doubles the rate of compute allowing for faster physics and compute calculations on Vega class GPUs
  • Clustered forward rendering – A light culling method that allows the convenience of forward rendering, requires a single geometry pass, and efficiently handles high light counts, minimizing CPU usage.

The Radeon GPU Profiler was beneficial in enhancing the game’s visual appeal, while optimizing overall performance,” said Jim Kjellin, CTO at MachineGames. Developing the game on Vulkan API gave us the opportunity to push our creative boundaries and deliver Wolfenstein without compromise.
